The Walking Chronicles: A Glimpse into High School Drama

Is your child or children close to heading into high school and you’re starting to worry about it all? Well, today we had a younger companion on our walk who gave us a preview of what it could be like.

A New Companion

Today’s walk had a little extra energy as we were joined by another friend’s daughter, who was off school for the day while her mom had to go to work. Her youthful enthusiasm added a fresh dynamic to our usual routine.

High School Insights

As we strolled along, our young companion gave us an unexpected but enlightening glimpse into the world of high school. She shared stories about the drama, the relationships, and even the surprising issues that come with teenage life. From Year 7 students dating and dealing with pregnancy rumours to the constant whirl of high school gossip, we heard it all. With each tale, we exchanged glances that seemed to say, "Oh crap, is this what we have to look forward to?" It was fascinating—but also gave us some much-needed insight, especially with our own children only a few years away from entering high school themselves.

Reflections on the Walk

We couldn’t help but chuckle (and maybe groan a little) at some of the stories she shared. It was a mix of humour and slight panic as we realised what our kids might be stepping into soon. Today also reminded us of the importance of keeping open communication with our children. It’s crucial not only to talk but also to listen—really listen—to what they’re saying. Looking out for signs of distress, such as changes in mood or behaviour, is essential. Staying connected and supportive can make all the difference as they navigate the ups and downs of high school. 

As always, "The Walking Chronicles" keep us on our toes, one step at a time.

The Olive

Today our friend Tracey joined us on our walk. It's always extra fun and filled with laughter when our friends tag along, and today was no exception. The morning was bright, and with Tracey by our side, we knew it was going to be a walk to remember. It always is! Our walk began by passing an olive tree, its branches heavy with ripe olives. As we admired the tree, Shaz and Tracey encouraged Nat to try an olive straight from the tree. Nat, who loves olives, didn’t need much convincing, but they warned her with grins that olives fresh off the tree didn’t quite taste the same as the ones from the jar. Eager to prove them wrong, Nat took a nibble out of the olive, expecting the usual burst of salty, briny goodness. Instead, her face twisted in surprise. The taste was bitter, and the texture dry and furry—a far cry from the olives she loved. Today's walk was not just a stroll down the familiar path; it was a journey of shared emotions, unfiltered expression, and unwavering support. Walking with friends isn't merely about moving forward physically; it's about the profound connection that allows us to move forward emotionally, side by side.
